Our Partnerships

When joined together in comprehensive partnerships, organizations have the power to reach new audiences, expand upon existing projects, and make a difference in the world around us. In this spirit, Discovery is proud to partner with leading government, educational and nonprofit organizations in the communities where we live and work that foster curiosity, education, and diversity. Below are video highlights of some of Discovery’s local and national partnerships that showcase our combined efforts to make an impact.

Through both direct contributions and in-kind support, Discovery is committed to preserving and protecting the world and its inhabitants and providing increased opportunity to underserved individuals. A century ago, there were 100,000 tigers on the planet. Today, there are less than 4,000. Discovery’s Project C.A.T., Conserving Acres for Tigers, is a mission to save tigers by doubling their population by 2022. WWF played a key role in developing an initial plan for this mission and continues to ensure it is put into practice. Discovery works with WWF to provide resources that help monitor tiger population, maintain land corridors that foster wildlife movement, and educate on human-wildlife conflict. For more information, visit the Project C.A.T. website.

In 2014, President Barack Obama announced a public-private partnership, My Brother’s Keeper, to improve the expected life outcomes of boys and men of color and alter public perception of them. David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications, was named to My Brother’s Keeper’s National Convening Council, a body created to draw attention to and support the multi-sector work of the initiative. Discovery has committed more than $1 million in support of My Brother’s Keeper.

In 2002, the U.S. Congress passed the Flight 93 National Memorial Act designating the crash site of Flight 93 near Shanksville, PA, as a national memorial commemorating the events of September 11, 2001. The Flight 93 National Memorial is now the nation’s permanent tribute to the heroism of those whose incredible acts of bravery saved countless lives at the cost of their own. Discovery is proud to support the National Parks Foundation’s efforts to establish this memorial by donating 100% of the proceeds from DVD and digital sales of THE FLIGHT THAT FOUGHT BACK, a ground-breaking Discovery Channel program reconstructing the events of Flight 93, to the memorial campaign.

Connect the Dots is Discovery Communications’ STEM education initiative, designed to provide pathways for kids to achieve today and lead tomorrow by inspiring interest in STEM subjects and careers within industries looking for highly skilled workers. By connecting kids, parents and schools with Discovery’s STEM programs across its networks, education and digital platforms, Connect the Dots is seeking to make STEM a critical part of kids’ lives, prepare them for the jobs of the future and inspire the next great discovery.

Connect the Dots’ multi-pronged approach includes Discovery Education STEM Camp, a series of standards-aligned STEM curricula available at no cost to schools, districts, nonprofit organizations and parents, annual nationwide student science competitions for middle school students, events on Capitol Hill and elsewhere recognizing the importance of and encouraging women and minorities to pursue careers in STEM, and partnerships with national organizations committed to promoting STEM involvement.

Two of the STEM-focused organizations that Discovery has partnered with around Connect the Dots are Girls Inc. and US2020. Girls Inc. is an organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. To further their work and message, Discovery created and aired a Girls Inc. PSA across its portfolio of networks and distributed STEM Camp resources to girls across the United States. Discovery is also the exclusive media partner for US2020, a nonprofit dedicated to matching 1 million STEM mentors with deserving youth by the year 2020.

Discover Your Skills is a multimedia campaign acting on the critical need to address the gap between job skills and employer needs. In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education and Labor and Skills for America’s Future, Discovery developed and launched DiscoveryYourSkills.com as a resource for underemployed and unemployed individuals to obtain critical skills and information. Concurrently, Discovery created and aired 11 PSAs featuring various on-air Discovery talent to highlight career opportunities in the skilled trades and the importance of training workers to fill critical jobs in manufacturing, health care, energy, technology, construction and other industries. Two of the PSAs are in Spanish, and one focuses on the importance of our veteran workforce.

In conjunction with Discover Your Skills, Discovery also supports the local community surrounding its Silver Spring, MD Global Headquarters. The company holds representation on the Montgomery County Workforce Development Board, partners with Montgomery College to provide critical vocational knowledge, best practices, hands-on skills, and internship opportunities, and works with Science Channel and America’s manufacturers to promote careers in the skilled trades in connection with National Manufacturing Day. This partnership includes an open house tour of Discovery’s technical facility in Silver Spring and a panel discussion for local students featuring employees who work at the facility in technical roles.
