In addition to its on-screen dedication to enlightening and inspiring viewers about the importance of environmental stewardship, Discovery also strives to lead by example through its own sustainability practices, from the environmentally friendly design and operation of our world headquarters building, to green-friendly IT practices, to empowering our employees to save energy, reduce waste and practice sustainability in the workplace.
The Discovery Impact@Work program engages Discovery’s employees to become ambassadors for greening the company through the distribution of information on practical ways to go green in their everyday lives. As part of the program, Discovery also has implemented permanent changes in its global office locations, including the installation of recycling bins, low flush toilets and urinals, composting areas, and rain water collection systems to irrigate green areas.
In 2017, Discovery launched its first year-round donation program, Donation Station. Located in our headquarters in Silver Spring, MD, Donation Station partners with green removal service, Donation Nation, to collect, donate, and recycle gently used home goods from Discovery employees. The program provides additional opportunities for employees to give back and protect the environment.
Discovery Rooftop Garden Program
In 2017, Discovery Communications headquarters in Silver Spring launched a Rooftop Garden program in partnership with Ifshin Gardens. The program engages employees in sustainable gardening practices and teaches skills on composting and utilizing fresh ingredients daily.
GreenD is an Employee Interest Group (EIG) leveraging the power of employees to champion environmental awareness and sustainability within the company and our community. GreenD aims to make positive environmental changes by engaging and empowering Discovery employees and their families. Members share their passion for the natural world, and exchange tips on how to best connect with it. GreenD offers them the opportunity to educate themselves about the threat that our environment is facing as well as practical solutions to preserve it.
ENERGY STAR Recognition
In 2016, Discovery World Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s prestigious ENERGY STAR label with a score of 95 out of 100. This award came after a 41.6% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from a 2005 baseline.
In 2008, Discovery Communications headquarters in Silver Spring became LEED platinum certified after changes were made to the building to reduce its carbon footprint. The Silver Spring office scored perfectly in the ‘Innovation’ category, with an overall rating of 66 out of 85.
