Discovery Bolsters 2017 Content Slate With Immersive New Programmes

(London, United Kingdom) – Discovery Networks today revealed three highly anticipated shows to be showcased this year:

Brand new series COOPER’S TREASURE and MANHUNT: UNABOMBER tell dramatic real life stories that give a unique insight into two very different worlds. Both highlight a spirit of determination and adventure as the central protagonists set out to solve two great mysteries, one historical, one crime.  The shows are set to premiere on Discovery networks in more than 220 countries and territories this year.

The channel will also be launching a global event, MOSQUITO. This feature length documentary sounds a worldwide alarm about the need for bold action to stop the increasingly urgent threat that mosquitos, and the diseases they carry, pose to humanity. The programme dives deep into the unique biology of the mosquito, revealing its uncanny ability to adapt to and overcome efforts to control it, and explores the reasons for its rapid spread, from climate change to the rise of rapid global transportation.

“Discovery prides itself on bringing the best in real-life storytelling to a wide audience.  These programmes have a gripping subject matter, genuine jeopardy and intrigue,” said Susanna Dinnage, President of Discovery Networks UK and Chief Content Officer.

She continues; ”Our fanbase want their curiosity sparked with one-of-a kind stories that engage them and make them think. These three shows demonstrate the creativity and breadth of storytelling across Discovery”.

COOPER’S TREASURE is the ultimate real life adventure series, a treasure hunt that started in space.  It follows treasure hunter Darrell Miklos as he sets out to decode the treasure map of his boyhood idol astronaut Gordon Cooper.

In 1963 onboard Faith 7, Gordon smashed the record for the longest space flight by completing a 122 hour mission aboard but during this mission he made a discovery that he then kept a secret for decades. While circling the Earth, he noted an anomaly around the South Caribbean. During his journey, he is thought to have recorded over 100 more.  Over several decades, Gordon created a map that he believed could uncover billions of dollars-worth of treasure. Before passing away, Gordon shared his secret with his long-time friend Darrell Miklos. Darrell is now setting out with a team of explorers and researchers to uncover treasure and accomplish Gordon’s long-held dream.

COOPER’S TREASURE is produced for Discovery Channel by AMPLE and Amblin Television. For AMPLE, executive producers are Ari Mark and Phil Lott. For Amblin Television, executive producers are Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. For Discovery Channel, executive producers are Joseph Boyle and Coordinating Producer Brian Peterson.

MANHUNT: UNABOMBER tells the dramatic and gripping true story of the FBI’s hunt for the Unabomber, the deadliest serial bomber in history.  The story focuses on FBI Agent and Criminal Profiler Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald (played by Sam Worthington of “Avatar ” and “Hacksaw Ridge”), who pioneered the use of forensic linguistics to identify and ultimately capture the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany, “Gangster No. 1,” “Captain America: Civil War”). As a fresh faced Criminal Profiler and the newest member of the Unabom Task Force (UTF), Fitz faced an uphill battle not just against the Unabomber – one of the most sophisticated and brilliant criminals in history – but also against the bureaucracy of the UTF itself as his maverick ideas and new approaches were dismissed by the system.

MANHUNT: UNABOMBER is produced by John Goldwyn, serving as consultant to Discovery, Lionsgate, Discovery Channel and Trigger Street Productions. Emmy® Award-winning television producer and director Greg Yaitanes (“Quarry,” “Banshee”) will executive produce, direct and serve as showrunner and Andrew Sodroski, whose “Holland, Michigan” topped Hollywood’s famed Black List for screenplays in 2013,  created the series and serves as an Executive Producer. Jim Fitzgerald will serve as Consulting Producer.

MOSQUITO is part of Discovery’s Impact series addressing major global issues that could have a devastating impact on mankind.  Mosquitos are the single greatest agent of death in modern human history. Today, rapid environmental shifts including climate change and the ease of international travel have increased the threat mosquitos pose by hastening their spread around the globe. These changes are bringing diseases like Zika, dengue and yellow fever to unprepared parts of the world, from Brazil to Florida to New York, putting millions of new lives at risk.

Shot on four continents and featuring insights from some of the world’s leading experts – including Tom Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and leaders’ from the World Health Organization – MOSQUITO gives a unique insight into this growing global pandemic.  This incisive feature documentary is a call to action for the enormous international efforts required to stop the spread of this insidious insect across the Globe.  The film dives deep into the unique biology of the mosquito, revealing its uncanny ability to adapt to and overcome efforts to control it – presenting new and potentially controversial methods of eliminating the danger they pose.

MOSQUITO is produced for Discovery Channel by Yap Films; directed by Su Rynard. For Yap Films:  executive producers, Elizabeth Trojian and Elliott Halpern.  For Discovery Channel, supervising producer, Jon Bardin; executive producer John Hoffman.
