Silver Spring, Md. – Discovery Communications announced today that it will celebrate Constitution Day with the next installment in its “Of the People” educational series, hitting classrooms nationwide this week in the form of a Virtual Field Trip featuring U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Richard Blumenthal as well as Senate Historian Dr. Betty Koed. Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, will present the unique Virtual Field Trip live nationwide at 8:00 A.M. ET this Friday, September 15.
Through this no-cost immersive learning opportunity, participating elementary and middle school students will learn how the Constitution has created a unique role for the Senate in the U.S. Government. Senate Historian Dr. Betty Koed will kick off the virtual experience and provide attendees an up-close and behind-the-scenes look at the upper house of the United States Congress. U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution Chairman Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ranking Member Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) will then join to share background on the Subcommittee’s role in the enforcement and protection of Constitutional rights, maintaining a separation of powers, making Constitutional amendments, overseeing federal-state relations, and more.
“Discovery launched ‘Of the People’ in 2014 as part of our long-standing commitment to deliver real-world content that entertains, educates and inspires our audiences. We have since taken thousands of students on unique, behind-the-scenes journeys to gain a deeper understanding of our U.S. government,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications. “With this latest Virtual Field Trip, we are proud to further that commitment by again offering students an opportunity to immerse themselves in the inner workings of the people and policies shaping today’s world.”
“Discovery Education is proud to work with Dr. Koed and Senators Cruz and Blumenthal to present students nationwide with this unique virtual learning experience,” said Marty Creel, Discovery Education’s Chief Academic Officer, and Vice President, Digital Instruction. “Understanding the critical role the Constitution plays in our everyday lives is important to preparing every student to participate in the civic life of our nation, and we thank our leaders in the U.S. Senate for their support in creating and delivering this exciting digital learning opportunity.”
