— Silberwasser to Lead Key Content Initiatives Including the Global Launch of TLC —
(Silver Spring, Md.) Discovery Communications today announced the appointment of Luis Silberwasser to the new role of International Head of Content for Discovery Networks International (DNI), reporting to Mark Hollinger, President and CEO of the division. The International Head of Content role is being created to accelerate DNI’s ratings success across the company’s global channel portfolio of over 100 networks in more than 180 countries.
“Discovery is focused on leveraging its programming strength to enhance our ratings global performance. Luis has demonstrated strong creative and strategic leadership in his current role as head of our Latin American content group and this is why I am expanding his role,” said Hollinger. “He will be a great asset to the wider international team as we launch key programming initiatives, including TLC, around the world.”
Discovery Communications last week announced the global launch of TLC, one of the fastest-growing female lifestyle channels in the U.S. and the home of top-rated shows including LA Ink, Cake Boss, and Say Yes to the Dress. The international version of TLC will be available in more than 75 markets reaching more than 100 million households by Spring 2011, making it the most widely distributed female lifestyle channel brand in pay-TV.
TLC joins Discovery Communications’ portfolio of global brands that also includes Discovery Channel, available in more than 180 markets; Animal Planet, available in more than 170 markets; Discovery Science, available in more than 100 markets; ID: Investigation Discovery, available in more than 20 markets; and Discovery HD, available in more than 60 markets around the world.
In other personnel news, Sahar Elhabashi, Chief Operating Officer, Discovery Networks International, will be leaving the company and her position will not be replaced. Hollinger continued: “It is with regret that I am announcing that Sahar will be leaving the company. She has made an outstanding contribution to DNI’s business over the last three years and has been a tremendous asset. I wish Sahar every success in the future.”

Luis Silberwasser currently serves as Senior Vice President of the Content Group for Discovery Networks Latin America/U.S. Hispanic and General Manager of U.S. Hispanic Networks. In these roles, he is responsible for all aspects related to content, including programming acquisition, scheduling, production development, marketing/communications, and operations for the 12 networks operating in the Latin American region. He is also directly responsible for expanding and managing Discovery’s Spanish-language offerings in the U.S. Hispanic market – which includes Discovery en Español and the Discovery Familia channels.
Under Silberwasser’s direction, viewership for the Latin American portfolio of channels grew 28%, against an increase of 5% in Total TV viewing in 2009. Discovery Channel, Discovery Kids and Discovery Home & Health continue to serve as top networks in the factual, children and women’s lifestyle arena across the region.
A veteran of DNI, Silberwasser has held several leadership positions within the company including senior vice president of international strategic planning for Discovery Networks International as well as vice president of affiliate sales and business development and vice president of marketing for Discovery Networks Latin America.
Prior to joining Discovery in 1998, Silberwasser held management positions with Sunbeam Corporation and Procter & Gamble. Silberwasser holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech.
