–World-class and local Olympic Heroes join the coverage team to bring the events alive for viewers—
LONDON – 2 June, 2016 – Discovery Communications today revealed details of its production program for PyeongChang 2018, strengthening the media company’s commitment to make the 2018-2024 Olympic Games available to more people across more screens in Europe than ever before. The announcement further highlights the Discovery mission to redefine the Olympic Games experience for viewers, fans and communities driving content evolution through innovation and technology.

Combined with best-in-class and new state-of-the-art production facilities, Discovery is securing some of the world’s most sought after talent at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Among the most accomplished Olympic Games athletes and storytellers joining the action are Jonathan Edwards, the British Olympic gold medalist and reigning world record holder in Triple Jump; Peter Forsberg, the Swedish Ice Hockey Olympic medalist who takes up his first ever commentary role at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, and Kjetil André Aamodt, Norway’s most decorated Alpine skier winning five Olympic gold medals.
Additional talent announced today includes:
- Per Elofsson – Renowned Swedish winter sports personality; three World Championship cross country gold medals and Olympic Games bronze medal from Salt Lake City 2002.
- Tom Stiansen – Former Norwegian alpine skier and winner of 1997 World Championships.
- Lasse Kjus – Former Norwegian alpine skier and five-time Olympic champion.
In Sweden, Discovery will broadcast a broad range of events on its free-to-air channel Kanal 5, together with Eurosport 1 and 2. The Olympic Games will be broadcast in Norway across free-to-air channel TV Norge, in addition to Eurosport and Eurosport Norge which will be the go-to destinations for sports fans to enjoy the action, 24/7.
The Olympic Games are highly valued and hugely popular with Norwegian and Swedish viewers. The London 2012 Olympic Games were watched by more than 4 million people (87% of the population) in Norway and 7.7 million (84% of the population) in Sweden. For the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, 4.3 million people (93% of the population) in Norway and 7.1 million people (82% of the population) watched the Games on television.
As part of its commitment to partner with the biggest and best Olympic Games broadcast partners in Europe, Discovery Communications also announces today sub-license agreements with RTÉ in Ireland and HRT in Croatia, adding to deals announced previously with the BBC in the UK, NOS in the Netherlands, YLE in Finland, and Czech TV in the Czech Republic. The local partnerships will further amplify the Olympic Games experience for fans playing their part in delivering Discovery’s commitment to ensure that the Olympic Games remains accessible to as wide an audience as possible.
